Description
Windmill Cottage is a house that dates back to the 16th century or earlier, with a chimney and floor in the hall added around 1600. It features a timber frame resting on a black stuccoed sill, and is weatherboarded in white with a steep hipped thatch roof. The building is 1½ storeys high and consists of three cells, originally an open hall house, facing west. Inside, there is a large internal chimney located a third of the way from the north end.
The west elevation has three windows and a battened door that is accessed by four steps, topped with a small flat hood supported by brackets. Flanking the door are three-light flush casements, and there is a flush sash window with 6/6 panes in the north end room. Dormers are positioned at the eaves in the center and over the north end, with a three-light casement window below.
The original structure has three bays, with the former open hall located in the middle. The west wall displays carpenter's marks on the timbers, and there is a three-light diamond mullioned window on the first floor, featuring a scarf joint above. A shutter groove is present on the opposite wall plate, and the ends of the tie beams remain cut back on each side of the hall.
