7/27 Welspen Thatch -

House. Early C18 or earlier, restored after fire 1983, higher W block 1984. Timber frame on stuccoed sill, weatherboarded with steep, half-hipped, thatch roof carried down over rear outshut. 1½ storeys, 3-cells, internal-chimney, lobby entry plan house facing S with chimney a third from original W end. Stair now in E service end. S front has 4 windows and 3 swept dormers at eaves (formerly only one, to hall) 2-light flush, small-paned casements. Gabled front porch with battened door. Interior has exposed timbers, thin studs, straight tension braces and wide open brick fireplaces with timber lintol. Unjowled posts. Floor and lean-to roof carried on ledges pegged to walls. Axial main beams. Face-halved bladed scarf in wallplate. Clasped purlin roof with thin poles for thatch. (Bailey (1980)24).
