Description
Roding House is a house that dates from the 15th or early 16th century, featuring an inserted floor and jetties in its middle part. It was renovated in the early 19th century when the walls were heightened, the jetties were underbuilt, and the southern wing was reduced to a lean-to. A later 20th-century renovation added a northwest rear wing. The house has a timber frame set on a stuccoed plinth, with roughcast walls and a slate roof that is hipped at the northern end.
This late medieval house has an unusual three-cell plan and faces east. It originally had a long open hall range with two-storeyed end bays, projecting and possibly resembling a Wealden house. The jowled posts in the southern parlour wing indicate that its roof was aligned with the hall range. The northern wing is axially divided, and until the late 20th century, the front door was positioned opposite the rear door, defining the cross-passage at the northern end of the hall range.
Two lines of dovetail lap joints on the three cross-beams of the 16th-century inserted floor in the hall range suggest that there were wide jetties at both the front and rear, which are now underbuilt. A large internal chimney was constructed at the upper end of the hall but did not heat the parlour. There were staircases in each end wing.
