Description

The lychgate, which includes a lockup, dates from the 15th century or earlier, with the lockup itself enclosed in flint and brick walls added in 1831. It features a timber frame resting on red brick sill walls and uncoursed flint, with grey brick quoins for the lockup. The roof is hipped and covered with old red tiles, including gablets. This small, single-storey rectangular structure faces south and is mostly open, except for the eastern two-fifths, which is occupied by the square lockup that is entered from the north.

Three heavy chamfered square posts are aligned along the central long axis, supporting the structure. Arched knee-braces are present at the head of the central opening, and there is a narrower side bay to the west. The posts are set on sill-beams that run north-south, with struts connecting to the posts. A longitudinal beam connects the tops of the posts and supports three heavy cross-ties that are braced from the posts. The roof has a single-framed collar rafter design, resting on heavy wallplates supported by the cross-ties.

Notably, the wallplate at the northeast corner has a head mortice for a corner-post and brace, indicating that a timber-framed enclosure or lockup may have existed before the current flint-walled version. The lockup features thick boards for the ceiling and a boarded door with a barred fanlight. It was used as the parish cage until the early 20th century.
