Description

Red Stack is a house from the late 17th century, featuring a timber frame on a stuccoed base and roughcast walls, topped with steep old red tile roofs. The building is 1½ storeys high and consists of three cells, following a lobby entry plan that faces east. It includes a 19th or 20th-century northern bay and a gabled rear wing at the northwest. The front has four windows, with three tall gabled dormer windows at the eaves, featuring 3-light flush casement windows with small panes and a central plank door. The dormers have 2-light casement windows. A tall rectangular central chimney has an ovolo capping on its rectangular lower stage, which is topped by six conjoined diagonal shafts. At the rear, there are two similar dormers and a small window under the eaves to light the stair beside the chimney.

Inside, there are two heated rooms with back-to-back fireplaces. The southern room serves as the hall, while the southern end originally contained two small rooms. The rear wall displays surprisingly late Kentish framing with slightly curved tension braces. The roof features collar trusses without tie-beams between the gable ends, with trusses in the partitions flanking the stack and at room divisions below. The upper chambers were not originally heated. Notable features include a face-halved bladed scarf in the wallplate by the stair, chamfered axial floor beams, and open fireplace lintels. Red Stack is of special interest due to its plan and construction.
