Description

Bentley's Cottage is a house dating to around 1700, with western additions constructed in the 1970s. The older eastern section has a timber frame on a black stuccoed plinth. It is clad in white weatherboarding and has a thatched roof with four eyebrow dormers facing the front. A red-tiled gabled rear wing and a lean-to porch, set back on the west side, are also present.

The house is long, extending over sixteen bays and three rooms, and faces south. Originally, the eastern part contained a winding staircase beside what was then the west gable, with an internal chimney and a bread oven. It featured a single large ground floor room, with a narrow service room at the east end. A central entrance and two front windows are above which are dormers. The oven projected west into a barn, now replaced by a two-dormer western extension which includes a door and end window. Flat-faced two-light casement windows are found in the dormers and eastern part, with a three-light window in the western part. An iron door gives access to the oven, and there are axial beams in the eastern portion.
