Description
The wellhead and shelter, dating from the early 19th century, is located at The Knoll in Anstey. It features a cast iron wellhead and a timber shelter topped with an octagonal pointed slate roof and a finial. The wellhead is large and openwork, situated on an island at a crossroads, with the shelter supported by eight square oak posts that are thickened by spurs at the base. The well is capped with a raised octagonal concrete slab. On the south side, there is a large flywheel with a mounting for a handle on one of its four serpentine spokes. The trestle is constructed in three stages, made of two parallel castings spaced apart. A small gear on a spindle from the flywheel drives a large gear mounted on a top spindle, which has a flanged winding wheel at its center. The lower spindle is bracketed out on the north side with a square key for an unknown purpose. Additionally, there is a large cast iron trough on the north side. This structure is a picturesque village feature of special social and technological interest.
