Description

The Old Bell is a house that dates back to the 17th century and was raised in height in the early 18th century. In the 19th century, the parlour was extended into the lower barn to serve as a club room for the public house, and it became a house around 1957. The building features a timber frame resting on a black stuccoed sill, with dark weatherboarding and roughcast at the rear, separated by a dripboard between floors. It has steep thatched roofs, with the barn having a hipped roof at the west and the house featuring a half-hipped roof. There is a thatched lean-to on the east side and a slated weatherboarded extension at the southeast with a monopitch roof.

The house is two storeys high and has a three-cell layout with an internal chimney and a lobby entry plan. It faces south, with the chimney located a third of the way from the west. The stair is situated in the entrance lobby, and there is an external gable chimney on the east side with an oven projection. A later addition is the parlour chimney, which backs onto the main chimney. There is a rear outshut leading to the hall and east service bays. The south front has three windows, featuring flush casement windows with two lights above and three lights below, along with a tiled porch in front of the door located by the chimney. Boarded doors lead to the lower barn at the west end.

Inside, the building showcases exposed timbers, with an axial beam supporting the floor over the hall and axial joists over the east service end. The hall contains a large open fireplace with chamfered brickwork, and the roof features clasped purlins with straight tension braces in the outshut. There is a moulded plank door with old iron hinges and a two-panel raised and fielded door leading to the club room. The barn also has a clasped purlin roof and flat rafters. The Old Bell was formerly known as the Bell Inn.
