Description
This milestone, located approximately 45 meters south of the track to Stonebury Farm, dates from around 1742 and was created for the Wadesmill Turnpike Trust. The front of the milestone is covered by an iron lettered plate, added around 1804, possibly designed by McAdam. It is made of white freestone and features a cast iron plate. The stone pillar is rectangular, measuring about 400 mm by 350 mm and standing approximately 900 mm high. The front has a large plate with a rounded top when viewed from the front. The plate has a segmental top and a raised edge bead, inscribed with 'LONDON/30/WARE/9/BARKWAY/5', with the first and last names displayed in raised segmental arcs.
