Description

This milestone, located on the south corner of the track to Athena Cottage in Wadesmill, dates from around 1742 and was created for the Wadesmill Turnpike Trust. The original inscription has been covered by an iron lettered plate, which was possibly designed by McAdam around 1804. The milestone is made of white freestone and features a cast iron front plate. It is a low square pillar of stone topped with a segmental curved top and a raised bead surrounding the plate. The inscription on the plate reads "LONDON/23/WARE/2/BUNTINGFORD/8", with the first and last words raised in segmental arcs.
