Description

This milestone, dating from around 1742, was created for the Wadesmill Turnpike Trust. It features an iron plate that was affixed around 1804, possibly designed by McAdam. The milestone is made of white freestone and has a cast iron front plate. It is a low square pillar, measuring about 400 millimeters square and half a meter high, with part of it buried. The iron plate has a segmental head with a raised edge bead. The raised lettering on the plate includes the inscription: 'LONDON 35 / BUNTINGFORD 4 / ROYSTON 3', with the first word of the inscription arranged in an arc. London Road is the historical Roman Ermine Street.
