Description
This milestone, located at the southeast corner of No 16 on Standon High Street in Puckeridge, dates from around 1742 and was created for the Wadesmill Turnpike Trust. The original inscription is covered by an iron plate added around 1804, possibly designed by McAdam. The milestone is made of white freestone and features a cast iron front plate. It is a low square pillar of stone, approximately 400 millimeters square, now partially sunk into the raised pavement, with about 500 millimeters protruding. The lower part of the large front plate is obscured. The plate has a segmental curved top and a raised edge bead. The inscription reads 'LONDON/27/WARE/6/(BUNTINGFORD/4)', with the word 'LONDON' raised in a segmental arc.
