Description

This milestone, located 120 meters north of the drive to Ryders Grove, dates from around 1742 and was created for the Wadesmill Turnpike Trust. The original inscription has been covered by a cast iron plate added around 1804, possibly designed by McAdam. The milestone is made of white freestone and features a low square pillar that measures about 400 millimeters square and 750 millimeters high, with a large front plate. The top of the milestone is segmentally curved and has a raised bead surrounding the plate. The inscription on the plate reads 'LONDON/26/WARE/5/BUNTINGFORD/5', with the first and last words presented in raised segmental arcs.
