Description
The Junior House at St Edmund's College is a historic building, originally constructed around 1630, with side wings added around 1759. The southern wing was internally rebuilt in 1973. It is built of red brick in English bond and features steep old red tile roofs. The house is designed in a U-shape, with two wings and a recessed center facing west.
The symmetrical front has a stucco-faced plinth and a curved central gable that includes a circular window. On the first floor, there are two recessed sash windows with 6/6 panes, set under flat arches. The ground floor has two similar windows flanking a central boarded door, which is framed by a wooden doorcase featuring Tuscan pilasters and a Doric entablature adorned with paterae between triglyphs, topped with a triangular modillioned pediment.
The projecting wings each have one window facing the courtyard and one facing the front. The gable parapets are moulded, with corbelled kneelers and chimneys at the apex, including three diagonal shafts on the right and two on the left. The rear of the building features corresponding gables with three levels of casement windows, the topmost having lattice leaded lights. A large projecting central rear chimney has upper engaged shafts that form a Y-plan. There is also a 20th-century single-storey tiled lean-to at the rear, which serves as a new entrance for the school.
