Description
Hatchetts is a farmhouse that has been converted into a private house. It dates from the early 18th century and includes a 17th-century kitchen wing. The building was renovated and covered in grey brick around 1830, with a west bay added in the 20th century. The structure features grey brick, with the first floor of the south parlour bay framed and weatherboarded on the west side, and a Fletton brick south bay. The main range has a slate roof that is hipped at the north end, while the kitchen wing has an old red tile steep roof with two gabled dormers on each side.
The house is L-shaped and two storeys high, with one and a half storeys at the northwest. It has a three-unit plan with a central chimney located closer to the south end and a large chimney at the junction with the kitchen wing. There is a 19th-century doorcase in the angle, featuring a six-panel moulded door with reeded pilasters and a triangular pediment. The windows are flush box sash types with segmental arches. On the east garden front, there are three windows, including a two-storey canted bay on the right, and the flush boxes of sash windows have been converted to casement windows in the 19th century. The kitchen wing has two-light casement windows with segmental arches and a glazed lean-to conservatory.
Inside, the kitchen wing reveals exposed timbers and an inserted 18th-century floor with a chamfered axial beam and square joists. There is a large open fire in the kitchen, along with carved marble fire surrounds featuring fluted architraves and corner blocks. The interior also includes reeded mouldings on the plaster cornice and six-panel doors. Hatchetts was formerly the farmhouse for Hatchett Farm.
