Description
St Hugh's Preparatory School, located at St Edmund's College, was built in 1851 by Augustus Welby Pugin for the headmaster of St Edmund's College. The building has been extended to the rear and features a schoolroom added in the 19th century. A chapel was constructed in 1938, and a classroom wing was added in 1961, though these later additions are not of special interest.
The school is a two-storey house designed in an irregular H-plan, constructed of grey brick, with red brick used in less prominent areas on the north and west sides. It has steep red tile roofs. The west side includes a large single-storey schoolroom made of red brick with a hipped tile roof, which is partially pebbledashed. The building is designed in Gothic style, with the east front featuring a symmetrical three-window section on the right and an entrance in the angle, which has a deeply recessed section on the left.
The right side has two-storey canted stone mullioned bay windows flanking a single-storey central canted porch. The left side mirrors this with two similar canted bay windows. The entrance features a four-centred stone doorway with carved spandrels, a moulded label, and two carved plaques above—one depicting a lamb holding a papal key and the other displaying the Ward monogram. An oriel window projects over the entrance door.
