Description

St. Edwards is a house, now functioning as a convent, built in 1849 by Augustus Welby Northmore Pugin. The structure features pebble flint with brick and stone dressings and a fish scale tiled roof. It is two stories high with attics, displaying two gables facing the road, complete with pendant bargeboards and a central chimney stack. The first floor includes two light cusped gable openings, a four bay mullioned and transomed oriel window to the left, and a two light window with a label hood to the right. On the ground floor, there is a two light window to the right and a boarded four centred arched door to the left, which has a three light sidelight. The door is inscribed in Gothic script: "St. Edwards" on the left and "1 4" on the right. The right side of the building features a two storey closet projection, an eight arch verandah with an external staircase, and a bay window at the east, likely added by Edward Welby Pugin. This house was originally built as the priest's residence for St. Augustine's Church.
