Description

A pair of carriage gates with gate piers, walls, and a west wicket gate, dating to 1843-44 and 1859, serve The Grange, without house. The gates were designed by Augustus Welby Northmore Pugin in 1843-44, with later work in 1859 by Edward Welby Pugin. The gate piers are constructed of brick with stone copings and display heraldic ironwork featuring a rampant design with shields. A single-boarded wicket gate is also present. A brick curtain wall runs alongside, incorporating a pedestrian wicket entrance with a four-centred arch. In the north-west corner of the property stands a half-hipped and gabled block; this served as Pugin's stained glass cartoon school from 1845.
