Description

This is a lift built between 1928 and 1929 by Basil C. Deacon of Franklin and Deacon from Luton, located at the Western Undercliff leading to the Royal Esplanade. The lift features a stone base and a rendered shaft with a glass front. The base is rusticated and vermiculated, sitting on a plinth with a heavy cornice above the main shaft. To the right, there is a recessed single-storey rusticated block. The shaft is designed in three stages, resembling a pylon, with a recessed centre panel. The main elevation is filled with coloured glass that transitions from dark blue at the bottom to white at the top, divided into three sections by cross-panels. The side elevations are simply rendered. At the top, the pilaster-buttress is crowned with a fluted frieze and recessed to a parapet leading to an ogival dome, all of which is rendered. There are boarded doors in a rendered surround at both the top and bottom of the shaft, as well as on the side block, which houses the engine.
