Description
Thorpe House is a house that dates back to the 16th century or earlier and was originally an open hall house. It was refronted in the early 19th century. The rear of the building features an exposed timber frame with pargetting in panels between, while the rear wing is made of painted brick, and the front is stuccoed brick. The house has steep old red tile roofs, with the front range being hipped and the rear wing having a half-hipped design.
The structure is two stories tall with an attic and is divided into two parts. The longer left part has a low parapet, a plinth, a raised band at the eaves, and contains three windows. There is a flat-topped two-light casement dormer and a large central chimney that is plastered. On the first floor, there are two-light flush casement windows with small panes, and on the ground floor, there are two similar windows to the right of the door.
The 19th-century shopfront features a door and a divided window to the left, linked with a moulded fascia on brackets. The right-hand bay is short and slightly recessed, containing a large rectangular carriage entrance with double gates, a small three-light casement window near the eaves, and the main entrance door to the left of the carriageway. This door is a four-panel door set in a moulded doorcase with a flat hood supported by shaped brackets.
The original building extends over the carriageway, supported by heavy close-set joists and jettied at the rear, with a wide-spaced timber frame and exposed tension bracing. Inside, there is a notable 17th-century staircase.
