Description
20 and 22 High Street is a pair of houses that were originally a single house from the 16th century, later refronted in the early 18th century. The structure has a timber frame that is plastered, although some of the framing is exposed in the passage to the south. It features a painted brick sill and steep old red tile roofs. The building is two storeys tall with a crosswing at the south that extends to the rear, although the front jetty has been cut back to the wall line.
No 20, located on the right, has two upper floor windows and a canted bay window on the ground floor, with the entrance door on the left accessed by two steps. No 22, on the left, has one window on each floor and a higher ground floor level, with four steps leading up to the door, which is positioned adjacent to the right side of the lower window. Both houses feature flush box sash windows with moulded surrounds and 6/6 panes, with the ground floor window of No 20 being larger. The bay window has small paned casements that have been repaired.
The entrance to No 20 includes a more elaborate six-panel fielded door set in a moulded doorcase with a flat hood supported by shaped brackets. No 22 has a six-panel flush door in a moulded doorcase that shares a small hood with the adjoining window. The south side of the building displays exposed timber framing with close studding, tension bracing, and a cut-off jetty support. There is a large chimney at the rear and a weatherboarded gable on the rear wing. Additionally, there is a 19th-century rear lean-to extension that is slated and two storeys high.
