Description

Nos. 2 and 4 East Street are two houses that were originally a single house, dating from the 17th century or earlier, with alterations made in the 19th century. The buildings are timber framed and plastered, topped with handmade red plain tiles. The main structure faces north and features two axial stacks that join over a central passage, forming a single stack to the right of the center. No. 2 is located to the right of the passage, while No. 4 is to the left. There is a full-width extension at the rear of the property.

No. 2 has a rear stack and a 19th-century red brick extension, while No. 4 includes a range of 20th-century single-storey lean-to extensions at the back. The houses are two stories tall with attics. On the ground floor, No. 2 features two late 19th-century tripartite sash windows with three lights each. The first floor has three late 19th-century sash windows with six lights, plus two additional windows in gabled dormers, which have late 19th-century bargeboards with simple geometric piercings. No. 4 has a four-panel door on the left side of the passage, while No. 2 has a 20th-century glazed door at the rear, above which is an early 19th-century sash window with 16 lights. The rear gables are weatherboarded.

The timber frames are hidden by internal finishes, and the beams are boxed in, but some of the framing on the left return is exposed in the adjacent house (No. 6). This exposed framing shows straight bracing that is trenched outside the studding. The owner of No. 4 reports that old hardwood floorboards are present beneath softwood boards that have been added to level the floor.
