Description

No. 9 Market End is a house that now functions as both a residence and a shop. It dates from the 16th century or earlier, with alterations made in the 18th and 19th centuries. The building is timber framed and plastered, with a roof covered in handmade red plain tiles.

It features a two-bay crosswing that is aligned at right angles to the street and has rear extensions. The structure rises three storeys. On the ground floor, there is a late 19th-century shop front with a 20th-century window to the right and a recessed glazed door to the left, which includes a plain overlight. The elevation has panelled pilasters at each end, each adorned with three carved flowers. Above the fascia, there is an egg-and-dart band and a plain cornice.

The first floor has two late 19th-century sash windows, each with eight lights, while the second floor contains two early 19th-century sash windows with twelve lights. The eaves cornice is dentilled and moulded, returning to the right. The roof is hipped. The framing of the right wall is exposed in the adjacent No. 11, indicating that the three storeys are original and feature arched display bracing that rises to the central post, which is trenched into the studs. There was no access to the interior during the survey conducted in July 1987.
