Description

No. 9 Market Street is a house that was formerly a shop, dating from the late 16th century, possibly earlier, with a 19th-century exterior. It features a timber-framed and rendered structure topped with a low-pitched slate gabled roof. The building stands three storeys high and has a stack at the southwest gable end.

On the second floor, there are two small 2-light casement windows with top-hung ventilators. The first floor has two larger windows of the same style. The ground floor showcases a 19th-century shop front with a fascia and five simple pilasters, framing a pair of entrance doors, a single entrance door, and two large window openings that include mullions and transoms. The doors are glazed with a single horizontal glazing bar and have square raised-and-fielded panels below.

There is a splayed recessed corner that connects with the splayed elevation of No. 10. The building displays three bays of timber-framing with moulded bridging joists from around 1500 on each floor, which may have been reused. There are indications that the building incorporates materials from the late 16th century and was raised in height in the early 19th century. Inside, there is an early 19th-century staircase featuring column newels and stick balusters.
