Description
No. 24 Church Street is a house, now functioning as a shop, that dates back to the 16th century or earlier, with alterations made in the 18th and 19th centuries. The building is timber framed and plastered, topped with a roof made of handmade red plain tiles. It has one bay facing northwest and a half-bay to the right, with a 20th-century single-storey extension at the rear. The structure stands two storeys tall with an unlit attic.
The front features a full-width late 19th-century shopfront that includes four plain pilasters, a moulded fascia, 20th-century windows, and a half-glazed door. On the first floor, there is one tripartite sash window with three sets of 12 lights, which is either early 19th-century or a replica. The building has a plain parapet, and above the ground floor, between the bays, there is a chamfered transverse beam with lamb's tongue stops, which does not have mortices for studding below. The post connected to this beam at the rear is unjowled, and the rear wallplate is chamfered with step stops. The front wallplate features an edge-halved and bridled scarf joint. Some studding has been removed between the bays of the upper storey. There are reported initials and a date in plaster on the left side of the upper storey, although this was concealed by furniture during a survey in June 1987. Most of the timber frame is hidden by internal finishes.
