Description
No. 4 St Nicholas Street is a house that has been converted into a shop and dwelling. It dates from the mid-16th century and was refronted in the mid-19th century. The building features a rendered timber frame, which has been replaced by mid-19th century brick at the front, and has a gabled concrete tile roof added in the 20th century. It has a parallel plan and stands two storeys high with attics, presenting a symmetrical three-window range. Notable architectural features include a bracketed cornice, corner pilasters, and a raised central bay. The shop front has mid to late 19th century plate-glass windows supported by console brackets, along with a framing fascia board and a doorway to the left. There are gauged brick flat arches above four-pane sash windows, and two gabled dormers with similar sashes. A mid-20th century extension has been added to the rear.
Inside, the first-floor front room is distinguished by double-astragal moulded beams that feature a six-pointed star at the intersection, along with plaster decorations of fleurs-de-lis and a Tudor rose on three of the four ceiling panels. The north wall of the first-floor room showcases 16th century close studding with a passing brace, and the attic space contains an ante-room divided by a late 16th or early 17th century parallel oak screen.
