Description
Herrings is a house that dates back to the 16th century or earlier, with alterations made in the 18th century and renovations completed in 1951. It features a timber frame that is plastered, with some sections covered in weatherboarding, and is topped with handmade red plain tiles. The main part of the house has two bays facing northwest and forms a parallelogram plan, with a stack located at the rear of the left bay and a longer range extending beyond, which includes two axial stacks.
There is a 20th-century single-storey extension at the rear of the right bay, along with a conservatory. The house is two storeys high. On the ground floor, there are two 20th-century sash windows with 12 lights each, and a bowed oriel window with 24 panes, which has replaced a shop window. The first floor features two early 19th-century sash windows with 12 lights and crown glass. The exterior has ashlar plaster and a plain parapet. A half-glazed four-panel door is located in the left return, set within an introduced doorcase that has fluted and panelled jambs and a moulded pediment. The side windows facing Swan Yard are from the 19th and 20th centuries.
The front has an underbuilt jetty. Inside, there are chamfered beams with plain and lamb's tongue stops, and in the rear wing, exposed plain joists are visible. The right wallplate of the rear wing shows mortices for diamond mullions, and there are jowled posts. Introduced features include an eared doorcase with a Greek key border and a broken pediment, as well as a pine and gesso fireplace in the Adam style. In the front right corner of the left upper room of the main range, there is an introduced 18th-century pine corner cupboard, now attached, which has a spheroid head and profiled shelves with a modern base. The current owner possesses deeds dating back to 1703. The two moulded posts previously reported by the Royal Commission on Historical Monuments are no longer visible. The name of the site has been recorded since 1394.
