Description
This is a house located in Swan Yard, dating from the late 16th century, with alterations made in the 19th and 20th centuries. It has a timber frame that is plastered and a roof covered with handmade red plain tiles. The house features two bays facing northeast and has been extended to the right and left, with two 19th-century stacks positioned at the front of the ridge. It is two storeys high and has a four-window range of 20th-century casements. The entrance includes one 20th-century glazed door, one door made from old boards, and a plain 20th-century door to the right. The exterior has 20th-century ornamental pargetting.
Inside, the rear wallplate shows an edge-halved and bridled scarf joint, and there are two blocked unglazed windows, one with a diamond mortice and the other with a groove for a sliding shutter. The structure features heavy studding with primary straight bracing. The roof is a clasped purlin type, with rafters that have oblique trenches and gauging holes from a previous crownpost roof. The left extension is from the 19th and 20th centuries and is reported to be on the site of a former smithy. The right bay, although now roofed in line with the others, retains some early structural elements in the right wall and shows evidence of a jetty at the front, indicating that it has been rebuilt from a former two-bay crosswing.
