Description

Pouches Thatch is a house dating from the early 16th century, with alterations made in the 20th century. It features a timber frame with a plastered exterior and a thatched roof. The main part of the house has three bays and faces southwest, while there is a two-bay crosswing to the left, with an axial stack at the junction. A two-storey extension was added to the rear of the crosswing in the 20th century, along with a single-storey flat-roofed extension in the rear angle. The main range consists of one storey with attics, and the crosswing has two storeys.

On the ground floor, there are four 20th-century casement windows, and the first floor has two more, including one in a gabled dormer. The date 1697 is inscribed in the plaster of the dormer gable, though its significance is not known. The building features jowled posts and curved braces set inside heavy studding. The crosswing includes a chamfered binding beam, plain joists with a horizontal section, a cambered central tiebeam with one remaining arched brace, and a crownpost roof with axial bracing. There are grooves for sliding shutters on the front and side, but no evidence of a jetty.

The main range has an inserted floor supported by longitudinal plain joists on pegged clamps from the late 16th century. Internal tiebeams have been removed or severed, and the roof is fully plastered. There are two 20th-century grates in the axial stack.
