Description

Brand's Farmhouse is a house dating from the early 16th century, with alterations made in the 20th century. It features a timber frame, is plastered, and has a thatched roof. The house has a two-bay hall facing northwest, which includes an early 17th-century stack located in the right bay against the rear wall. To the left is a storeyed parlour or solar bay, while the right bay is a service bay that was probably originally unstoreyed. There is a two-bay ancillary building from the 16th century to the right, which is now incorporated into the house.

A 20th-century rear extension is single storey with a flat roof, forming a T-plan, and there is a smaller extension in the left rear angle. The building is one storey with attics. On the ground floor, there is one 19th-century casement window and three 20th-century casement windows. The first floor has two 19th-century casement windows in gabled dormers, along with a 20th-century door.

The structure features jowled posts, heavy studding with arched bracing that is trenched to the inside. The left bay has longitudinal plain joists of horizontal section supported on pegged clamps. The hall contains a chamfered axial beam with lamb's tongue stops and plain joists of vertical section supported on pegged clamps. The right bay has transverse plain joists of horizontal section, also supported on pegged clamps. The roof is a crownpost design, which originally included axial braces that have since been removed. There is a large wood-burning hearth facing to the left. The ancillary building has arched braces trenched outside heavy studs, jowled posts, and was originally storeyed in at least one bay, but is now open.
