Description

Thatches is a house dating from the 15th century, with extensions added in the 16th century. It features a timber frame with plastering and a thatched roof. The building has a two-bay hall that runs north to south, with an axial chimney stack inserted at the north end in the late 16th century, along with an inserted floor. To the south is the original storeyed parlour or solar bay. The service bay to the north was demolished in the 16th century and replaced by a two-bay structure with an off-centre chimney stack, along with a 17th-century extension beyond. The house is one storey high with attics, featuring a plain boarded door, five 20th-century casement windows, and three 19th-century casement windows in gabled dormers. The roof is half-hipped at the south end.

Inside, there are jowled posts with half-octagonal attached shafts on the central posts of the hall. The original floor of the south bay has lodged joists of horizontal section arranged longitudinally, along with a trimmed stair trap. Hall windows are present on both sides, one with three diamond mullions and the other with five. The inserted floor of the hall includes an axial beam and horizontal joists, all of which are chamfered with step stops and supported on pegged clamps. Notably, the original smoke vent at the south end of the roof has mortices for a projecting hood. The sides of the south hearth have been rebuilt. The floor of the 16th-century extension features an axial beam that is chamfered with step stops and plain horizontal joists.
