Description
The Old Rectory is an early 19th-century house constructed of gault brick with a slate roof. It was originally designed with an almost symmetrical plan, oriented approximately north-south, featuring a central entrance hall and an axial chimney stack on the south side, along with an external chimney stack on the north wall. Shortly after its construction, the house was extended to the north, which included a chimney stack in the north wall.
The building stands two storeys tall, with the original section showcasing a central door that has four glazed panels set within a recessed porch, adorned with stucco pilasters and an architrave. The front has a three-window range of double-hung sashes, each with twelve lights and supported by cast-iron lintels. The hipped roof has a low pitch. The northern extension features a two-window range of double-hung sashes with sixteen lights, also with cast-iron lintels, and a hipped roof that has a steeper pitch than the original.
On the east (garden) elevation, the original part of the house has French windows, each with sixteen lights, while the ground-floor windows of the northern extension consist of tripartite double-hung sashes with four, twelve, and four lights. All windows on both elevations are original, with most panes made of crown glass. The only external alterations include rendering on the north wall and a 20th-century external stair with glazed sides and a corrugated asbestos roof. The cast-iron lintels are of particular historical interest and are considered rare, with one at the rear of the original house dated 1835.
