Description

Blenheim House is a late 16th-century house in Wethersfield, altered in the 20th century. It is timber framed and mostly plastered, with some exposed imitation framing, and has a roof of handmade red clay tiles. The main block has four bays facing southeast, with an axial stack at the left end and a rear stack near the right end. A rear wing extends to the right, forming an L-shaped plan, with a 20th-century extension in the left rear angle. A 20th-century single-storey lean-to extension is at the right end. The house has one storey with attics. The windows include a 20th-century splayed bay, one 20th-century casement, and two more in lean-to dormers, all with diamond leading. There is a 20th-century front door. Inside, traces of old patterned plaster remain in panels. Exposed imitation framing can be seen on the right return. The house features chamfered beams with lamb's tongue stops, and a chamfered mantel beam with lamb's-tongue-plus-bar stops, framing a large wood-burning hearth. The internal frame has interrupted tiebeam construction, originally accommodating a first-floor doorway, now blocked.
