Description

The Hoods is a house located on the north side of High Street in Wethersfield. It dates back to the early 16th century and was extended in the late 17th century. The building is timber framed, primarily covered in plaster, and has a roof made of handmade red clay tiles.

The original structure is a three-bay range aligned northeast to southwest, featuring an axial stack at the southwest end. There is a parallel three-bay range to the southeast with a rear stack in the left bay, which was added in the late 17th century. To the left, there is a small single-storey extension with a slate roof, as well as a single-storey extension at the rear. The house stands two storeys tall.

On the southeast elevation facing High Street, there is a two-window range of 20th-century sashes with four lights each and a 20th-century door designed in a late 16th-century style. The original rear range features jowled posts, with some studding exposed internally. It has plain joists of horizontal section, a blocked stair trap in the right bay, and chamfered transverse and axial beams, along with chamfered joists of horizontal section, all adorned with lamb's tongue stops. In the upper rear wall, there is a blocked unglazed window with diamond mortices. The roof is constructed with crownpost framing and axial braces, and it is ceiled below the collar-purlin level. On the first floor, there is an early 17th-century (or earlier) ledged door. The front block contains two chamfered transverse beams with lamb's tongue stops.
