Description

The Bakery and Burleigh Cottage is a house that has been converted into two houses and a shop. It dates from around 1580 and was extended in the 17th and 18th centuries. The building has three bays facing southeast with a central stack that creates a lobby entrance, and there is a one-bay extension to the right from the early 17th century. To the left, set back from the main elevation, is an 18th-century range that extends to the rear, now known as The Bakery. There is also a lean-to extension behind the main range.

The main range has two storeys and attics, while the left range has two storeys. The ground floor features a 19th-century shopfront with a glazed door, both under a slated canopy, along with two 19th and 20th-century tripartite sash windows with 2-4-2 lights and one early 19th-century casement window with 12 lights. On the first floor, there are four late 19th-century sash windows with six lights. There is one 20th-century door and one early 19th-century door with six flush panels, both under shallow hoods. The roof of the left range is hipped.

The building includes jowled posts and curved tension bracing set inside close studding, with an underbuilt jetty at the front. An unglazed window with three diamond mullions is located in the original right wall, now serving as an internal partition. The interior features chamfered axial beams with lamb's tongue stops and plain joists, as well as a large wood-burning hearth facing right. In front of the original middle bay on the first floor, there is a blocked original window with two moulded mullions and three diamond saddle bars. The combination of an original glazed window at the front, an original unglazed window at the side, and lamb's tongue stops allows for a close dating of around 1580. The roof has clasped purlins with arched wind bracing.
