Description

Kendalls is a house dating from the mid-16th century. It is timber framed, plastered, and has a roof made of handmade red clay tiles. The main part of the house has three short bays facing southeast, with a stack in the right bay against the rear wall, and a two-bay crosswing to the right. There is a single-storey lean-to extension at the back of the crosswing, which is partly weatherboarded and has a catslide roof. Additionally, there is a 20th-century single-storey extension at the rear of the left bay. The house is two storeys high and features a two-window range of 20th-century casements, along with a plain boarded door that has one small light. The roof of the crosswing is hipped at the rear.

Originally, the house had a jettied front elevation, which has since been underbuilt. It has jowled posts and close studding with curved braces that are trenched to the inside. All posts, girts, and wallplates are chamfered with step stops. Inside the main range, there are chamfered axial and transverse beams, with joists plastered to the soffits. There are also blocked unglazed windows with shutter grooves, one missing tiebeam, and a large wood-burning hearth that has been reduced for a modern stove, forming a lobby entrance. In the crosswing, there is a chamfered binding beam with step stops, and joists of horizontal section that are chamfered with step stops both inside and outside the former jetty. The blocked unglazed windows here also have shutter grooves. Both crownpost roofs are almost complete, with chamfered posts and collar-purlins featuring step stops. This house is exceptionally well-finished for its time, dating between 1550 and 1575, and has undergone minimal alteration.
