Description
River Hill Cottages is a house that dates back to the 16th century or earlier, with alterations made in the 19th century. It is timber framed and plastered, with a roof made of handmade red clay tiles. The house has two bays facing southeast, featuring an axial stack at the left end and a one-bay extension that connects with No. 2 River Hill Cottages. There is a 19th-century external stack at the rear, which is enclosed by a lean-to extension that runs along the entire rear elevation, creating a catslide roof. The building has two storeys and a two-window range of 20th-century casements, along with a 20th-century door. The upper part of the front wall and the right gable display exposed imitation framing. Inside, there is a chamfered binding beam and plain joists arranged longitudinally. Heavy arched braces support the left girt or binding beam, and the left tiebeam is cambered. On the first floor, there are two unglazed windows at the rear, now enclosed by the lean-to; one window retains diamond mullions and a shutter groove, while the other is blocked. Access to the roof is not available. This building is of an unusual type and may be a remnant of a larger house or originally a non-domestic building, such as a granary, that was later converted into a house.
