Description
No. 23 Market Place is a house with a later shop, originally built in the 16th century and later refaced and altered in the mid-19th century and again in the 20th century. The building is timber-framed and clad in brick, topped with a tiled roof. It features a four-unit plan that is set end-on to the Market Place and has three storeys. The front has a regular two-window range beneath a hipped roof, with cogged brick eaves. The upper-floor windows have rusticated lintels and key-blocks, with four-pane sashes on the second floor, while the first-floor windows have been bricked up. The ground floor has 20th-century glazed concertina doors.
At the rear, the timber framing is visible on the east wall at the first floor, showcasing close studding with curved angle braces. The rear gable end has segment-headed windows on the upper floors and wedge lintels over the sash window on the ground floor. Inside, the first floor features 18th-century joinery, including doors and a fire surround, as well as a steep winder stair. The roof structure includes queen struts with side purlins and braces. The partition between the two central bays is made of close studding, and an ogee-headed arched doorway visible in the west wall belongs to the adjacent property, No. 25.
