Description

No. 12 Hill Street is a house and shop dating from the early 19th century, with a later 19th-century rear extension and some partial refronting. The building is timber-framed and plastered, with brick and slate roofs, and has an L-shaped plan. It stands two storeys tall.

On the front (south) elevation, the ground floor features a full-width shop front with its own door and a second door at the west end. While much of this is now 20th-century work, the shop retains a 19th-century reed moulded dado. The first floor has three bays, with one bay on the west being timber-framed and plastered, while the other two bays are brick-faced. There are three sash windows, each with three panes by four panes. The roof is hipped with boarded eaves.

The east side elevation has a long range adjacent to the carriageway and yard of No. 14, which partially obscures it. At the south end, there is a shop front return window, all of which is 20th-century. Above this, the elevation is timber-framed and plastered, with the end of a later brick wall visible. There is a single sash window with three panes by four panes. To the north, beyond the carriageway, the ground floor is brick, while above it has 20th-century weatherboarding with a single light window. Further north, there is an addition in a similar style but slightly taller, featuring a central doorway with a 20th-century door between windows. To the south, there is a two-light casement window with four panes by three panes and an upper light with four panes by one pane. To the north, there is a 20th-century casement window. The first floor has a 20th-century casement window with three panes by two panes and one with two panes by two panes. The building is included for its group value.
