Description
No. 2 Market Street is a house and shop dating from the early to mid 19th century, likely originally built as a residence. The building features stuccoed brickwork with ashlar detailing and a slate roof, along with gault brick stacks. It has a rectangular plan, with a street-facing range and a 19th-century rear lean-to. The structure stands three storeys tall.
The west elevation has three bays, with a central doorway accessed by steps. This doorway is framed by stucco moulded pilasters and a frieze decorated with rosettes, featuring a segment-headed design with a keystone, an overlight, and a 20th-century glazed door. To the north, there is a lesser recessed doorway with a keystone that aligns with a string course between the floors, an overlight, and a 19th-century four-panelled door, where the lower panels are moulded and the upper ones are now glazed. To the south of the centre, there is a window (currently used for the shop) with a keystone and a single vertical glazing bar.
On the first floor, there are plain sash windows that are recessed and topped with cornice hoods and consoles. The second floor features segment-headed windows with plain sashes. The roof has deep eaves supported by shaped brackets and kneelers, with ridge stacks located at the gables.
The east elevation at the rear is constructed of brown brick and has a single central sash window on both the first and second floors. There is a slated lean-to that adjoins a small two-storey gault brick addition at the northern end. To the east of this addition, there is a slender gault brick stack and another small lean-to with a monopitch roof.
