Description
Two early 19th century terraced houses with 20th century additions, located on Hill Street, Saffron Walden. The houses are constructed of gault brick with slate roofs and brick stacks. They have an L-shaped layout. The north front elevation consists of five bays, with each house comprising two bays plus an additional bay at the east end for a rear passageway. Each house has a central stack shared with an adjacent window, and doorways in the outer bays. Brick pilasters define the bay units, paired at the centre and finished with terracotta moulded capitals. All windows are segment-headed with stone sills, featuring sash windows with thin glazing bars, arranged in a 3x4 pane pattern. Some original glass remains. An additional window, similar in style, is located on the first floor of the passageway bay. The doorways have semicircular overlights with decorative glazing bars. The doors are four-panelled, with the upper two panels moulded and the lower two flush with bead moulding. One door has a blind overlight, while the other has ornamental glazing bars. Round-headed boot scrapers are positioned at the house doors. The rear south elevation mirrors the front, although the west end incorporates a two-storey, 20th century rendered brick addition with a felt roof in the final bay. Each house has one early 19th century segment-headed sash window on both the ground and first floors, with a 4x4 pane configuration. Number 19 has an early 19th century four-panelled door and an adjacent cobbled passageway, with a 20th century single-light casement window above. Number 17 features a 20th century addition with two 20th century two-light casement windows. The east-facing elevation has a 20th century door with an upper glazed panel and a 20th century single-light casement window on the first floor. A single first-floor segment-headed sash window with a 3x4 pane arrangement is situated on the east end elevation.
