Description
No. 13 Hill Street is a mid-19th century shop located in Saffron Walden. The building is constructed of rendered brick and features a concrete tile roof with stacks at the right end ridge and a rear roof pitch. It has four bays and two storeys, with 12-paned sash windows and a panelled eaves soffit. To the left, there is an elliptical carriage arch with timber double gates. The shop front is a combination of cast iron and timber, showcasing a fascia cornice with palmette moulding, a recessed central door framed by egg-and-dart moulding in the architrave, colonnettes with moulded capitals, moulded spandrels, and side pilasters that are panelled in the upper part. The fascia ends in a decorative feature with detached colonnettes. Inside, the shop features timber partitions in the hallway, a staircase with stick balusters, and a ramped and wreathed mahogany handrail, complemented by running dog moulding on the tread ends.
