Description
No 1 Market Street is a well-detailed building dating from 1893, designed in the French Renaissance style. It is constructed of ashlar and has three storeys plus an attic. The elevation facing the Market Place features a wide, four-light mullioned and transomed window, flanked by richly moulded pilasters that vary at each level. These pilasters culminate in obelisk finials above a modillion cornice, which is topped by a gable that encloses a three-light mullioned window with a relief cartouche at the apex and a finial.
A three-light bay window projects at the return angle, tiered over the second and third storeys, and is carried above the cornice as an octagonal turret. This turret has angle pilasters, arched lights, and a dentilled cornice, which is surmounted by a cupola and wind vane. The building features a carved relief frieze adorned with scrolls, cherubs, and serpents' heads, along with the date 1893. There is a recessed moulded wood doorcase at the return angle, complete with a rectangular fanlight. The shop window is set within a four-centred arch that has a moulded keyblock and carved panels within the spandrels.
