Description

No. 125 High Street is a house with a shop, featuring a mid-19th century front built on 16th or 17th century foundations. The front is rendered, with brickwork and a tiled roof, and has a brick stack. The building has a parallel side-entry plan and a parapeted front that covers a former throughway to the right, concealing a steep-pitched roof. At the rear, there is a lower 19th century gabled brick wing. The structure is three storeys high with a basement and has two windows. The plain sashes have moulded surrounds and originally featured open scroll pediments, although these have been removed at the first floor, leaving marks on the rendering. The window cills are supported by two small brackets.

The notable mid-19th century shop front includes two canted bays with pilasters and arched heads above the lights, a panelled stall-riser, a moulded fascia, and decorative cast-iron cresting across two-thirds of its width. To the right, there is a glazed door set in pilasters, which is currently blocked above by a transom-light; this door provides access to the adjoining premises, No. 126. The main fascia extends across the full width of the front, complemented by a moulded main cornice and a small blocking course. An eaves stack is located at the back of the main range. The shop front is a particularly fine example. The interior has not been inspected.
