Description
No. 122 High Street is a house with a shop, dating from around 1840, but it incorporates main fabric from the 16th century. The building is stuccoed with a tile roof and brick stacks. It appears to be a simple refacing of an earlier framed structure, with the roof ridge of the front range visible behind the parapet. The fireplace is located at the rear, on the left side. There is a lower brick gabled wing at the back, which has a stack.
The house has two storeys and features two windows. The small square two-light small-pane casements are set in moulded architraves with a plain cill band. The channelled ground floor includes a wide 19th-century pilaster shop front with a recessed central door. To the right of this is a six-panel door beneath a shallow transom light, also in a moulded architrave. A fascia runs the full width above the ground floor. Above the widely spaced windows is a plain band, followed by an entablature, a blocking course, and a coped parapet. The door on the right leads to a throughway. There is a tall brick stack at the rear eaves on the left side.
The slight projection from No. 121 has a chamfered and stopped arris, and the detailing is similar to that of Nos. 120 and 121, suggesting that the frontages were rebuilt at one time. However, the small windows indicate that this was primarily a replacement of the frontage. The interior was only partially inspected, but on the ground floor, inside the shop front to the right, there is a broad chamfered and stopped beam, with a section of bressumer beam supported by a slender cast-iron column, along with remains of a jetty bracket.
