Description

No. 14 High Street is a shop dating from the early 17th century. It features a timber-framed structure that is rendered, topped with gabled roofs covered in plain tiles. A small brick stack is visible on the front roof slope. The building is a single storey with an attic and has a two-window range. The ground floor, which was originally jettied, has one bracket exposed on the exterior and two more visible inside. The shop front has been updated in the 20th century with large panes of glass and a glazed six-panel door.

There are two gabled dormers, each containing a 12-pane sash window set in a moulded surround. Inside, the building has an interesting frame with a long spine beam that is chamfered and features lambs-tongue stops, spanning the full width of the site. An off-centre cross-passage leads to the rear stairs. The front wall shows evidence of two door-like openings and large areas that likely served as shop windows without subdivisions. Above a now-removed south-western cross partition, there is an A-frame truss with a collar and dovetail joints, resting on rafter feet. Part of the rear wall has been replaced with brick.

The north-eastern flank was built in an open-framed style against a 15th or 16th-century open truss that has large arch braces supporting the tie beam, which is now infilled with later studwork. The south-western flank reveals the exterior of No. 12, showing studwork and a parlour door with an arched doorhead and hollow chamfers, likely dating from the early 16th century.
