Description

No. 9 High Street is a shop with a flat above, dating from the early 19th century, although it may have earlier origins. The building is timber-framed with a painted brick front and hipped plain tile roofs. The main block is roughly square in shape, with the roof running parallel to the High Street, and features two adjoining roofs at right angles to the rear. There is a long extension wing that forms the south-west boundary of the rear garden.

The exterior is two storeys tall with a cellar and has a three-window range. The front elevation features a plain parapet and tripartite sash windows on the first floor, each with one vertical glazing bar and a flat-arched head. The ground floor has an early 19th-century shop front with a fascia supported by six consoles and a later blind box. There is a central recessed doorway with double doors, panelled reveals, and a square fanlight with two horizontal lights. Windows on either side of the doorway are flanked by thin pilasters and consist of three lights with a central transom. A high plinth is present, along with boarded cellar access beneath the south-west shop window.

The rear elevation of the main block is rendered and features one 12-pane and one 8-pane sash window on the first floor, along with an iron escape staircase. The ground floor has an early 19th-century rear door and a tripartite small-paned sash window. There is a small lean-to with a slate roof. The rear wing has a gabled plain tile roof and three 12-pane sash windows on the first floor of the north-east flank. The ground floor of this wing includes one small-paned tripartite sash, a 12-pane sash, an 8-pane sash, and two doors.

Inside, the ground floor of the shop has a modillioned cornice made of painted timber. On the first floor, one room features a plaster cornice, while the rear room has an early 19th-century marble fireplace. The cellar has a floor made of reused 16th-century moulded timbers. The front block is primarily an early 19th-century timber-framed structure, largely constructed from reused timber.
