Description
No. 7 High Street is a building that houses shops with a flat above, dating from the 17th century and early 19th century. It features a timber-framed structure with a painted-brick front in Flemish bond. The building has two parallel plain tile roofs that are positioned at right angles to the front, with hipped fronts behind a plain parapet and rendered gables at the rear.
The exterior is three storeys high and has a four-window range. The second floor includes two square sash windows that are recessed under brick arched heads, featuring both a central vertical and margin glazing bars. The first floor has two wide and two narrower sash windows with similar detailing. On the ground floor, there are two plate-glass shop windows from the 20th century and two plain glazed entrance doors from the same period. At the rear, there is a central opening on the second floor with a blind render panel.
Inside, the building showcases an interesting quality timber frame from the first half of the 17th century, featuring many innovative aspects of a 'box frame' design. Major timber members are chamfered with lambs-tongue stops and additional diamond indentations. The top plate in the north-west first-floor room is heavily moulded, and the front corners of the first floor have internal wall braces attached to the corner posts. There are two lateral spine beams arranged in a recessed assembly that frames a former stack bay, which has been removed during the last renovation. The twin roofs feature curved collars, side purlins, and reused late medieval rafters. A linked roof provides access between the A-framed attics and may be an original feature.
