Description
No. 22 High Street is a house in a row that features an early 19th century front built on earlier structures. The exterior is rendered and has scribed plaster over brickwork, topped with a tile roof and brick stacks. The building has a deep plan with a parallel front range that incorporates earlier fabric and a mid-19th century rear wing. It stands three storeys tall with a basement and has two windows on the front. The large 16-pane sash windows are set in moulded plaster architraves with stone cills. The 19th century shop front includes channelled pilasters, a large plate-glass display window, and a glazed door within a surround. The plinth features a basement grille. To the far left, there is a six-panel fielded door in a moulded architrave. A full-width moulded cornice is topped by a sunk panel with a raised mould surround that has Greek key ornamentation. Above this, a moulded parapet cornice sits over a plain frieze that returns at the ends and has a small blocking course raised in the centre. The right side has a plastered return wall, and the steep roof runs parallel to the street, featuring a cropped brick stack on the right. Inside the throughway, on the left party wall, there is a moulded 17th century beam supported by four shaped stone corbels. At the back, the mid-19th century gabled brick wing rises three storeys and has two windows, brick dentil eaves, and a large eaves stack. The interior has not been inspected.
