Description

No. 93 Church Street is a house with a shop, featuring an early 18th-century front that is part of an earlier structure. It has painted brickwork, a steep-pitched tiled roof, and a brick stack. The building has a parallel-plan front range, is two storeys tall with an attic, and has three windows. There is a central two-light small-pane casement gabled dormer above twelve-pane sash windows, which have painted brick voussoirs and scroll-like keystones. Below the stone cills, there is a two-course brick band. The ground floor has a 19th-century shop front with nine-pane display windows on either side of a part-glazed door that is topped by a shallow transom-light. To the right, there is a 19th-century flush-panel door under a transom-light leading to a throughway. The display front features end pilasters with scroll brackets, five slender cast-iron columns, and a fascia with a cornice and remnants of decorative cast-iron cresting. There are two blocked basement openings in the shop stall-board risers. At the back, there is a tall brick stack at the eaves and three 20th-century roof lights on the back slope. A long low wing at the back has a tiled roof. The interior has only been partially inspected; the timber-framed rear wing includes a deeply-chamfered ground-floor beam.
